Cottage Farm Revival

Located in Brookline’s Cottage Farm Historic District, this 1910 residence underwent a full-gut renovation to create a timeless, functional home for a young family who enjoys cooking and entertaining. The project focused on balancing historic preservation with meaningful spatial and performance upgrades.

Original elements, including dark wood paneling in the dining room and oversized stair windows, were carefully maintained. Rather than alter defining features, the design introduced lighter finishes, textiles, and a refined blue-neutral palette to bring balance and light to the interior.

The kitchen was reconfigured to improve circulation and spatial efficiency. Removal of a secondary stair and partial reallocation of the walk-in pantry allowed the footprint to expand and align more logically with adjacent living spaces. Cabinetry is organized to emphasize horizontal continuity and visual calm, with durable quartzite countertops and full-height tile reinforcing longevity in a high-use environment. A built-in banquette defines an informal dining area that supports everyday use while preserving the integrity of the formal dining room.

Because exterior modifications were limited by historic district guidelines, strategic interior interventions were prioritized. A new wet bar with wine refrigeration was integrated near the sunroom, maintaining material continuity with the kitchen while introducing a subtle metal grille detail.

At the rear, the existing sunroom was reworked to unify ceiling heights and enlarge window and door openings, strengthening its connection to the backyard. A custom trellis extends the architectural language outdoors, reinforcing the relationship between interior and landscape.

The result is a historically respectful renovation that improves spatial clarity, functionality, and durability while preserving the character of the original structure.
