Huron Village Midcentury Makeover

SKA led a full gut renovation of this 1920s West Cambridge home, reworking the structure to meet the needs of modern living while preserving the character that defines its original architecture. The scope included a complete overhaul of both residential units, along with the addition of a new third floor to increase usable space and bring new life to the home.

After more than 80 years of continuous use, the house required significant upgrades to its core systems as well as a thoughtful reimagining of its interior layout. Existing spaces were opened up to improve flow, natural light, and day-to-day functionality. Kitchens, living areas, and circulation paths were reconfigured to feel more connected and intuitive, creating a layout that better reflects how people live today.

A key component of the project was the redesign of the rear porches. These spaces were transformed into meaningful extensions of the interior, strengthening the connection between inside and out while adding valuable square footage for seasonal use. The updated porches provide flexible space for gathering, relaxing, and enjoying the surrounding neighborhood context.

Throughout the renovation, care was taken to respect and retain the home’s historic elements. Original proportions, details, and architectural cues were preserved wherever possible, then paired with clean, modern interventions that feel intentional rather than imitative. The result is a balanced composition—one that acknowledges the home’s past while comfortably supporting its future.
